Additional Details

A wonderful, early image of the Indiana minister seated next to a small table, with his hand on the Bible. Willis R. Revels (1815-1879) was born free near Fayetteville North Carolina. He was the older brother of Hiram Revels, later U.S. Senator from Mississippi. Both brothers moved to Indianapolis sometime in the early 1840s. There they both studied for the ministry. Willis went on to study medicine and became a powerful voice in Indianapolis's black community.
